Newtown Veterinary Hospital's Policy on On-Line Pharmacy Retailers

We are sure you have all seen the advertisements on television and in the Sunday paper for various Internet or Mail Order Companies that sell prescription medications for your pets. What you don't see in these ads is that some retailers have been caught selling foreign products that do not meet FDA standards for sale in the United States. Many pharmaceutical companies like Novartis Animal Health, Merial and Fort Dodge will not honor any warranty for products if purchased from an on-line retailer. The warranty is only applicable if the said products are purchased through a licensed veterinarian. If you purchase your pet's medication from a licensed veterinarian and they develop any problem, such as heartworm disease, hook, whip or roundworms, you will be reimbursed for the entire cost of treatment, not just what you paid for the medication. An on-line retailer cannot fill prescription medication without authorization from a licensed veterinarian, therefore when we receive a request from an on-line retailer to fill prescription medications, we call our clients and inform them of these facts and also that we match on-line retailer prices for all flea, tick and heartworm medication, and if convenience is an issue, we offer to mail the medication to them. And, pharmaceutical companies are always offering promotions and savings coupons to be used at veterinarian offices that could bring the price even lower than what on-line retailers are charging.

If, after reviewing all the facts, you still wish to order your medications on-line, please call our office and we will have the written prescription ready for you to pick up or, if you prefer, we will mail it to you. We can eliminate the on-line retailer contacting us for the prescription. According to the State Board of Veterinary Medicine, it is unclear if it is legal to fax prescriptions because a fax does not contain an original signature. When you order from an on-line retailer, please be sure to ask if you are purchasing FDA approved products. If you have any questions whatsoever, please call our office and ask to speak to one of the doctors or technicians.
